As agriculture faces growing pressure to produce more food with less environmental impact, Blum Biologicals and North-West University (NWU) formalised a pioneering research partnership last Friday, marking an important step for sustainable agricultural innovation in South Africa.
Signed during an official ceremony attended by university leadership, researchers and agricultural industry representatives, the agreement brings together scientific research and commercial agricultural expertise at a time when the global farming sector is seeking more sustainable ways to improve food production.
Food security, soil health, and long-term farming resilience are rapidly becoming among the agricultural sector’s most urgent global priorities. Within this landscape, biological innovation is emerging as one of agriculture’s most promising areas of development.
Beyond the First Green Revolution
“We now need a second Green Revolution – one focused not only on food production, but on sustainability,” said Blum Biologicals’ Chief Science Officer Stephen Ford during the signing ceremony.
Ford explained that while the first Green Revolution dramatically increased global food production, it also accelerated agriculture’s dependence on synthetic fertilizers and chemical crop protection over several decades.
“We cannot continue introducing harmful synthetic chemicals into the food chain at the scale we have historically,” he said.

According to Ford, the agricultural sector is now entering a period where sustainability, environmental resilience and long-term soil health must become as important as productivity itself.
Biological solutions are now becoming a far more serious part of the conversation around sustainable farming, particularly as farmers worldwide face mounting pressure to improve yields while reducing environmental impact.
Blum Biologicals, a science-led agri-biotechnology company and sister company to Enviro Bio-Chem, focuses on developing biological crop protection and plant health solutions through microbial biotechnology, insect biology and data-driven agricultural research.
Ford added that the collaboration with NWU represents a significant opportunity to accelerate locally developed innovation into commercially viable agricultural solutions capable of creating real-world impact.
“Africa is one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet. If we cannot find transformative agricultural solutions here, I do not know where we will,” he said.
The partnership will focus on creating a direct pathway between scientific discovery and practical agricultural deployment, combining NWU’s research expertise with Blum Biologicals’ commercial development capabilities.
From Research to Real-World Agricultural Application
According to Professor Rasheed Adeleke, Professor of Microbiology at NWU, both organisations share a common goal of reducing agriculture’s reliance on conventional chemical inputs through biological innovation.
“We intend to create a direct commercialisation pathway – starting with the high-quality research conducted at North-West University and translating that into practical agricultural deployment through Blum Biologicals,” he explained.
Initial projects under the agreement will focus on the development of endophytic biofertilizer programmes as well as biological crop protection solutions for potato production systems.
Prof Adeleke explained that the collaboration has been structured on a project-by-project basis, allowing both institutions to combine scientific validation, commercial scalability and long-term research development within clearly defined innovation frameworks.
For NWU, the partnership represents an opportunity to strengthen the connection between academic research and real-world agricultural application, while also expanding opportunities for postgraduate researchers and future scientists.
Dr Janine Chantson, Chief Director of Technology Transfer and Innovation Support at NWU, said partnerships between academia and industry are becoming increasingly important as agriculture faces more complex sustainability and food production challenges.
She explained that while universities play a critical role in scientific discovery and talent development, industry partnerships are essential for translating research into practical, scalable agricultural solutions capable of delivering real-world impact.

Building the Next Generation of Agricultural Scientists
Prof Adeleke also placed strong emphasis on the role students will play in the collaboration, describing postgraduate researchers as integral to the partnership’s long-term vision.
“You will notice that I keep speaking about students because they will be an integral part of these projects,” he said during the ceremony.
He explained that the agreement has been carefully structured to ensure that students remain protected and supported throughout the research and commercialisation process, while still allowing innovation and intellectual property development to proceed responsibly.
The collaboration will include postgraduate bursary opportunities, project-based student involvement and research participation designed to help develop the next generation of South African agricultural scientists.
Prof Adeleke added that maintaining academic integrity and ensuring students can complete their studies successfully remained an important priority throughout the development of the agreement.
“I work very closely with my students, and I value their contributions immensely,” he said.
